Unser Wissenschaftskollektiv hirnkastl hat sich in den letzten Monaten um den Forschernachwuchs gekümmert. Wir haben Schülern und Studenten im Rahmen des Neurocamps, beim Tag der offenen Tür am Biozentrum und des MaxLabs Einblicke in Grundlagen der Neurobiologie gegeben.
Nächsten Monat werden wir Workshops im Makespace in Cambridge eine kleine Vortragsreihe geben. Wenn ihr auch mal gerne mit dem hirnkastl in Kontakt treten wollt, dann schreibt uns doch einfach eine EMail an: post@hirnkastl.science. The Summer of ´19

Huhuuuu,

Mit diesem Blogpost möchte ich Euch einen kleinen Rückblick auf meinen Sommer geben, denn es ist viel passiert. Dieses Jahr habe ich zusammen mit Backyard Brains eine Sonderausgabe des berühmten Summer Fellowships veranstaltet. Wissbegierige Studenten, die bereits ein Fellowship durchlaufen haben, kamen nach München, um ihre begonnenen Projekte aufs Papier zu kriegen. Dafür haben wir uns am botanischen Institut in Nymphenburg und am Biozentrum in Martinsried einquartieren lassen (https://blog.backyardbrains.com/category/fellowship/). Vielen Dank für die Unterstützung der jeweiligen Verantwortlichen. In 3 Wochen haben die Studenten gelernt wie man Daten aufnimmt, analysiert und in strukturierter Form als Veröffentlichung publiziert. Danach konnten die Studenten für 1 Woche Europa unsicher machen, während ich mit meinen hirnkastl Mitgründern nach Hamburg zur Otto-Hahn Medaillen Vergabe reisen durfte. Danach ging das Summer Fellowship weiter, um die Projekte für das regional FENS meeting zu polieren. Zeitgleich war dieser Sommer die Geburtsstunde des hirnkastl Projekts ERGo!. Zusammen mit BYB und Dan Pollak (Erstautor unserer letztjährigen Mantis Shrimp Studie) haben wir die ersten Elektroretinogramme von Bienen aufgenommen. Unser Ziel ist es dieses Experiment mit einfachen Mitteln durchführen zu können, um eine öffentlich zugängliche Datenbank von Insekten ERGs zu generieren. Zusammen mit einer Aufzeichnung der Insektenvorkommen erhoffen wir damit das Bewusstsein für die Erhaltung der Biodiversität zu erhöhen. Gefördert wird das Projekt von dem Fellowship für freies Wissen. 

In den nächsten Wochen wird unsere hirnkastl Website online gehen und werden an einem Prototypen für ein spielerisches Insekten-Smartphone-Quartett arbeiten.

Hallo Freunde!

Es ist mal wieder Zeit für ein kleines Update. Nachdem bei meinem Neujahrsevent in Wengen hauptsächlich Erwachsene vertreten waren, habe ich mich in den letzten Monaten mehr unserer wissenschaftlichen Zukunft gewidmet. Durch meine Freunde Becky und Christoph (Lehrer der Realschule Ebersberg und Berufsoberschule Kempten) konnte ich mal sehen wie die do-it-yourself Neuroexperimente so in deutschen Klassenzimmern ankommen. Vielen Dank an MM, der mich in Ebersberg unterstützt hat und mit mir eine kleine Evaluation entworfen hat (Datenauswertung kommt bald). Zusammen haben wir uns danach auf eine kleine Reise aufgemacht und unseren ersten Mentor Max Joesch in Wien besucht, um mit ihm einen Vortrag im Kindermuseum Zoom über das Sehen zu geben. Ausverkauft und begeisterte Kinder! 

Danach gings weiter nach Novi Sad zum Rest der BYB Europe Familie, um vorläufige Experimente für ein ERG (Elektroretinogramm) durchzuführen. Nach ein paar Stunden hat es mit einer kleinen Fruchtfliege und einer Plant SpikerBox bereits geklappt. Abschließend ging es noch nach Belgrad, um das diesjährige Summer Fellowship vorzubereiten.

Im Moment befinde ich mich wieder in Wien, da in Österreich das Wissensdurstfestival stattfindet. Schaut einfach vorbei! Noch stehen zwei Events an!

It's time again for a small update. Since my New Year´s event in Wengen was mainly attended by adults, I have dedicated the last few months more to our scientific future. Through my friends Becky and Christoph (teachers of the Realschule Ebersberg and Berufsoberschule Kempten) I could see how the do-it-yourself neuroexperiments fit in German classrooms. Many thanks to MM, who supported me in Ebersberg and designed a small evaluation with me (data coming soon). Together we went on a little trip and visited our first mentor Max Joesch in Vienna to give a lecture about Vision at the Kindermuseum Zoom. Sold out and enthusiastic children!
Then we went on to Novi Sad to the rest of the BYB Europe family to do preliminary experiments for an ERG (electroretinogram). After a few hours it worked with a small fruit fly and a Plant SpikerBox. Finally we went to Belgrade to prepare this year's Summer Fellowship.
At the moment I am in Vienna again, because the Wissensdurstfestival takes place in Austria. Just drop by! There are still two events to come!

Es hora de una pequeña actualización. Como mi evento de Año Nuevo en Wengen fue principalmente para adultos, he dedicado los últimos meses más a nuestro futuro científico. A través de mis amigos Becky y Christoph (profesores de la Realschule Ebersberg y de la Berufsoberschule Kempten) pude ver cómo los neuroexperimentos de Backyard Brains están recibidos en las aulas de clase alemanas. Muchas gracias a MM, que me apoyó en Ebersberg y diseñó una pequeña evaluación conmigo (los datos estará disponible pronto). Juntos hicimos un pequeño viaje y visitamos a nuestro primer mentor Max Joesch en Viena para dar una conferencia sobre sistemas visuales en el Kindermuseum Zoom. Niños agotados y entusiastas!
Luego fuimos a Novi Sad con el resto de la familia BYB Europe para hacer experimentos preliminares para un ERG (electroretinograma). Después de unas horas, funcionó con una pequeña mosca de la fruta y una Plant SpikerBox. Finalmente fuimos a Belgrado para preparar Summer Fellowship de este año.
En este momento estoy de nuevo en Viena, porque el Wissensdurstfestival tiene lugar en Austria. Pásate por aquí! Todavía hay dos eventos por venir!

New Year - New Projects

Hey Neuro-Aficionados!

With this blogpost I would like to summarize the past year with a short preview on 2019. After coming back to Europe from my 1 year South America trip, I started researching again at the MPI for Neurobiology and launched Backyard Brains Germany in order to focus on the "Neurorevolution" on the old continent. Therefore, I translated the experiments on the BYB website to provide learning material for German speaking science lovers backyardbrains.de/experiments. It is still in the process and will take more time to be polished but we are working on a multi-lingual version of online one website to make it easier for users to navigate. 

In summer I was part of the Summer Fellowship in Ann Arbor, where teachers and undergraduates performed their own research projects including data analysis and scientific writing. Mentoring ten different topics was a challenging experience and gave me the possibility to get to know a wild mix of young scientists. We have already submitted a manuscript for our Mantis Shrimp project and are now organizing a special Fellowship edition in Munich, where we will team up Post-docs/PhDs with BYB Fellows to finalize their investigations.  

In autumn I packed my bags and worked with BYB at 4 conferences in Germany, California, and Serbia. My personal highlight, however, came pretty unexpected. Stefana from the Novi Sad BYB crew brought up the idea that we could visit her mom's eco-school in Stara Pasova (Simeon Aranicki). The kids were amazed and some of them were explaining me how the experiments work before I could open my mouth. For every correct answer to my questions the classmates applauded and cheered for those exceptional students. On top of that wonderful day I will be honored by the school on January 28th. 

Finally, I spent the last days of 2018 in the Allgäu to prepare 2019 with an upcoming event in my home village Wengen on January 3rd.

Mit diesem Blogbeitrag möchte ich das vergangene Jahr mit einer kurzen Vorschau auf 2019 zusammenfassen. Nachdem ich von meiner einjährigen Südamerika-Reise nach Europa zurückgekehrt war, begann ich wieder am MPI für Neurobiologie zu forschen und gründete Backyard Brains Germany, um mich auf die "Neurorevolution" des alten Kontinents zu konzentrieren. Deshalb habe ich die Experimente der BYB-Website übersetzt, um Lernmaterial für deutschsprachige Wissenschaftsliebhaber bereitzustellen (backyardbrains.de/experiments). Es ist noch in der Überarbeitungsphase und wird noch etwas Zeit in Anspruch nehmen, um poliert zu werden. In Zukunft wird es eine mehrsprachige Website geben, um es den Nutzern zu erleichtern durch unser Programm zu navigieren.

Im Sommer war ich Teil des Summer Fellowships in Ann Arbor, wo Lehrer und Studenten eigene Forschungsprojekte durchführten und debei Datenanalyse und wissenschaftliches Schreiben erlernten. Die Betreuung von zehn verschiedenen Themen war eine Herausforderung und gab mir die Möglichkeit, eine wilde Mischung aus jungen Wissenschaftlern kennenzulernen. Wir haben bereits ein Manuskript für unser Mantis-Shrimp-Projekt eingereicht und organisieren nun eine spezielle Fellowship-Ausgabe in München, bei der Post-Docs/Doktoranden mit BYB-Stipendiaten zusammenarbeiten werden, um ihre Untersuchungen abzuschließen.

Im Herbst packte ich meine Taschen erneut und arbeitete mit BYB auf 4 Konferenzen in Deutschland, Kalifornien und Serbien. Mein persönliches Highlight kam jedoch ziemlich unerwartet. Stefana von der serbischen Novi Sad BYB Crew kam auf die Idee, dass wir die Öko-Schule ihrer Mutter in Stara Pasova (Simeon Aranicki) besuchen könnten. Die Kinder waren begeistert und einige von ihnen erklärten mir, wie die Experimente funktionieren, bevor ich meinen Mund öffnen konnte. Für jede richtige Antwort auf meine Fragen applaudierten und jubelten die Klassenkameraden den außergewöhnlichen Schülern. Als zusätzliches Schmankerl werde ich am 28. Januar von der Schule geehrt.

Schließlich verbrachte ich die letzten Tage des Jahres 2018 im Allgäu, um mich auf 2019 vorzubereiten. Als Auftakt steht ein Event in meinem Heimatdorf Wengen am 3. Januar auf dem Programm.

Con este blog me gustaría resumir el año pasado con un breve adelanto sobre el 2019. Después de regresar a Europa de mi viaje de un año a Sudamérica, empecé a investigar de nuevo en el MPI de Neurobiología y lancé Backyard Brains Germany para centrarme en la "Neurorevolución" en el viejo continente. Por lo tanto, traduje los experimentos de la página web de BYB para proporcionar material de aprendizaje para los amantes de la ciencia de habla alemana backyardbrains.de/experiments. Conference Marathon Germany-USA-Serbia

Good day!

Now it´s time for an update. The last months, thanks to Backyard Brains, I was able to travel all around the world and promote Neuroscience. We visited FENS2018, SfN18, NABT18, and the Neuronauke Festival. I was able to talk to Scientists, Biology Teachers, Undergrads, and pupils to get a better overview of the "Neurorevolution". Especially the Highschool students from Serbia impressed me by their innovative and smart solutions to built robots in a sustainable manner. A cute representative is Bobi. By vectorising pictures he is able to draw what he sees with only three servo-motors! We are definitely going in the right direction! Jetzt ist´s Zeit für ein Update. In den letzten Monaten konnte ich dank Backyard Brains um die ganze Welt reisen und weiter die Neurowissenschaften verbreiten. Wir besuchten die FENS2018, SfN18, NABT18 und das Neuronauke Festival. Ich konnte mit Wissenschaftlern, Biologielehrern, Studenten und Schülern sprechen, um einen besseren Überblick über die "Neurorevolution" zu bekommen. Besonders die serbischen Gymnasiasten beeindruckten mich durch ihre innovativen und intelligenten Lösungen, um Roboter nachhaltig zu bauen. Ein süßer Vertreter ist Bobi. Durch die Vektorisierung von Bildern kann er mit nur drei Servomotoren zeichnen, was er sieht! Wir gehen definitiv in die richtige Richtung!

Visitamos FENS2018, SfN18, NABT, y el Festival Neuronauke. Pude hablar con científicos, profesores de biología, estudiantes y alumnos para obtener una mejor visión general de la "Neurorevolución". Especialmente los estudiantes de secundaria de Serbia me impresionaron por sus soluciones innovadoras e inteligentes para construir robots de manera sostenible. Una linda representante es Bobi. Con sólo tres servomotores puede dibujar lo que ve con imágenes vectorizadas! Definitivamente vamos en la dirección correcta!

Pero primero quiero darles una actualización sobre el NeuroTour. Las últimas semanas las pasé en Ann Arbor, Michigan para el Programa de Verano 2018 de Backyard Brains - The Fellowship of the Brain.

We investigated exotic animal species, free will, meditation and mind control. As a Highlight we were visited by a Danish Filmcrew for the TV Show Simons Superkraefter. Many of the projects and their findings were promising for publications and future investigations! I learned a lot during the stay, especially in means of management and structuring of a big group. Really looking forward to our future collaborations.

Wir untersuchten exotische Tierarten, freien Willen, Meditation und Gedankenkontrolle. Als Highlight wurden wir von einer dänischen Filmcrew für die TV-Show Simons Superkraefter besucht. Viele der Projekte und ihre Ergebnisse waren vielversprechend für Veröffentlichungen und zukünftige Untersuchungen! Ich habe während des Aufenthaltes viel gelernt, vor allem in Bezug auf die Führung und Strukturierung einer großen Gruppe. Ich freue mich sehr auf unsere zukünftige Zusammenarbeit.

Investigamos especies animales exóticas, libre albedrío, meditación y control mental. Como punto culminante nos visitó un equipo de cine danés para el programa de televisión Simons Superkraefter. Muchos de los proyectos y sus resultados eran prometedores para publicaciones e investigaciones futuras! Aprendí mucho durante la estancia, especialmente en los medios de gestión y estructuración de un gran grupo. Esperando con ilusión nuestras futuras colaboraciones.

March 4 Science!

After returning to Munich end of December I needed some months of re-acclimatizing in Germany and visited all my friends and family I haven't seen for a year. I started working again at the MPI for Neurobiology part-time and I am setting up Backyard Brains Europe to bring the Neurorevolution to the old continent. The perfect place to promote the open science movement that Backyard Brains is following already 9 years was the March for Science (from Königsplatz to Marienplatz). As expected the crowd was not as big as in the previous year (from 3000 to 300) due to a couple of reasons: First, last year Trump was politicizing Science with his 'Climate change is a hoax' comments. Second, this year people had no drive to go on the street promoting the values they stand for (also decreasing numbers in the participation of the Women's March). Third, most of the people don't know about the importance of science in our everyday lives and ultimately it´s hard to motivate people to march at 9:30 in the morning on a Saturday, especially scientists :-)

However, the event, announced as a profest, was a success thanks to all the relaxed paricipants and the samba marching band Drumadama. It had a laid-back atmosphere within the beautiful historic city center. Finally, as the profest ended at the busy Marienplatz at midday I had the opportunity to show some interested people Neuroscience! Thanks to all my Hirnkastl friends helping me promoting Backyard Brains Europe and explaining the experiments.

Volví a Alemania fin de Diciembre y necesitaba unos meses para re-acostumbrarme a Alemania y visitaba todos mis amigos y familia que no he visto para más que un año. Empezé de nuevo en el instituto Max-Planck a tiempo parcial y estoy abriendo Backyard Brains Europe para llevar la Neurorevolución al continente viejo. El lugar perfecto para representar el movimiento de la sciencia libre que Backyard Brains ya está siguiendo hace 9 nuevos fue el March for Science (desde Königsplatz a Marienplatz). Como era esperado, no atrajo la multitud como el año pasado (de 3000 a 300) por varias razones: Primero, el año pasado Trump estuvo politizando la ciencia con su expresión 'el cambio climatico es una broma'. Segundo, este año la gente no tenía la motivación para manifestar por sus valores (también los números de participantes de las manifestaciones de 'ni una más' bajaron). Tercero, los demás no saben de la importancia de la ciencia en nuestra vida cotidiana y al final es muy difícil motiviar a gente para marchar a las 9:30 de la mañana el sábado, sobre todo a científicos :-)

Sin embargo, el evento, anunciado como una profiesta, fue un éxito gracias a todos los participantes relajados y la banda Drumadama. Tenía un ambiente muy tranquilo entre las calles maravillosas del centro historica de la ciudad. Finalmente, la profiesta terminó en el famoso Marienplatz a mediodía con mucha gente que me dio la oportunidad de demostrar un poco de Neurociencia! Muchas gracias a todos mis amigo del Hirnkastl que me ayudaron promocionar Backyard Brains Europe y explicaron los experimentos conmigo a la gente interesada.

This is an update for the NeuroTour after a long time! Unfortunately, my plan to bring 'Brunhilde' to Germany didn't work out as it is impossible to get her legally on German roads due to her puristic design that doesn't fit with the regulations. That's why I decided to return to the city where our magic began: Montevideo! 
Taking the Ché Guevara route from Bolivia to Argentina we made our way to Buenos Aires embarking the ferry to Brunhilde's hometown.

Hace mucho tiempo que no actualizé el NeuroTour. Por desgracia no pude llevar la 'Bruni' a Alemania porque parece impossible conseguir un permiso para andar en las rutas alemanas por regulaziones legislativas. Por eso decidí volver al lugar dònde empezó nuestra mágica: Montevideo!
Tomamos la ruta del Ché desde Bolivia a Argentina, Buenos Aires. Allá embarcamos a la patria de la 'Brunhilde'.
There I spent my last weeks in South America with the people that mind-blowed me the most with their incredible hospitality and their warm cordiality. Especially el Pollo and Agus welcomed me in their families that I felt at home immediately. That's why I left my beloved wife with them at their cooperative space 'La Fraterna', an incredible place with a relaxed and lovely atmosphere.

Alla pasaba mis últimas semanas en América Latina con las personas que ya me dejaron sentir cómo en casa. El Pollo y la Agus con sus familias me abrieron su casa cómo nos hubiesemos conocido por décadas. Por eso dejé mi esposa con ellos en el espacio cooperativo 'La Fraterna', un lugar increíble con un ambiente muy relajado y amoroso. 

Laptop Fiasco and Bucaramanga

Moving on to Ecuador my worst case scenario happened as my laptop broke down. I had to skip the planned NeuroTour stop Quito and travelled to Bogota where I unsuccessfully tried to get my laptop repaired. In Colombia a chain of lucky coincidences brought me to William Omar Contreras Lopez (Young Neurosurgeon of the year 2015). He invited me to Bucaramanga where I could present my NeuroTour at the Simposio Regional de Neurociencia that was held on the development of new technologies in Neuroscience. Thanks for the invitation, which made it possible to share my experiences with young motivated scientists (click here or here for video) and might be the start of future collaborations using the BYB equipment as Brain-Computer and/or Human-Machine Interfaces.

Siguiendo en la Panamericana hacia Ecuador lo peor de los casos imaginables pasó y se me rompió mi laptop. Tenía que saltar Quito como NeuroTour parada y viajé a Bogotá dónde infructuosamente intenté encontrar a alguien que puede repararlo. En Colombia una cadena de casualidades afortunadas me llevó a William Omar Contreras Lopez (Neurocirujano jóven del año 2015). Él me invitó a Bucaramanga a presentar mi NeuroTour en el Simposio Regional de Neurociencia. Gracias por la hospitalidad y la invitación que me permitió compartir mis experiencias con estudiantes motivados (haz click aquí o aquí) y podría ser el comienzo de cooperaciones del futuro usando los equipos de BYB de Interfaz Cerebro Máquina y/o de Interfaz Humano Máquina.
After nearly 15,000km travelling in South America and more than 20 NeuroTour activities I decided to slowly plan the route to Europe. I will return to Lima for two weeks and then visit Machu Picchu with my mom. After that I will try to ship 'Brunhilde' down the Amazon and across the Atlantic Ocean. I am happy for any advice or help. Luckily my BYB equipment is still working, so don't worry, this is not the end of the NeuroTour. Love and Kisses. ÉT
Después de casi 15,000km paseando por América Sur y más que 20 NeuroTour actividades decidí planear lentamente mi regreso a Europa. Vuelvo a Lima para dos semanas y después voy a viajar a Machu Picchu con mi mamá. Finalmente quiero embarcar mi kombi ´Brunhilde´y llevarla hasta Alemania en el Amazonas y Atlántico. Agradezco cada ayuda o consejos para este proyecto. Fortunadamente mi equipo todavía funciona, así no se preocupen, eso no es el fin the la NeuroTour.

Chiclayo - the city of friendship

My next stop was the city of friendship, Chiclayo, where I visited my friend Marlon Suarez with whom I studied Biology in Munich. With his help I was able to share my NeuroTour at the Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruiz Gallo (hosted by Prof. Pedro Chimoy) and the Universidad de Cajamarca. Once again, I was welcomed with open arms and experienced where Chiclayo got its nickname from. Sharing with the Peruvian costeños, I learned a lot about their culture, traditions and dances. La próxima parada fue chiclayo, la ciudad de la amistad, dónde visité mi amigo Marlon Suarez con quien estudié Biologia en Munich. Con su ayuda pude compartir mi NeuroTour en la Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruiz Gallo (invitado por Prof. Pedro Chimoy) y en la Universidad de Cajamarca. Como siempre, me cuidaron mucho y experiencé de dónde Chiclayo recibió su apodo. Compartiendo con los costeños peruanos he aprendido mucho sobre su cultura, tradiciones y bailes. Gracias por todo.

Spending the days in the Peruvian far North I once again realized how advantageous it would be for remote areas to have access to low-cost experimental science devices. Not only for educational purposes but also their potential use for hospitals and doctors in the countryside.

Pasando los días en el parte más norte de Perú reconocí las ventajas posibles de poblaciones rurales tener acceso a aparatos científicos de bajo costo. No sólo para mejorar la educación pero también para su uso en hospitales de regiones alejadas.
 

Lima y el Paradero

In Lima I was invited by David Chaupis to give a workshop in Henri Chispe’s cultural center ‘El Paradero’. At the same time this was the inauguration of the El Paradero laboratory, an open access space that enables scientists to give classes, presentations, and workshops. With the open laboratory 'El Paradero' gives scientists a platform to share their passion the same way as musicians can give concerts or artists can hold exhibitions. This mixture professions leads to an extremely creative atmosphere which makes it possible to see the world from different perspectives.  

After a short introduction about action potentials, neuroprosthetics, brain waves and how the BYB equipment works, the participants could take their time to discover by their own the broad application spectrum of the DIY experimental devices. I would like to thank the whole ‘El Paradero’ team for their hospitality. Giving me insights to the Limean life and their function as a cultural center was very inspiring and we'll see each other again.

David Chaupis me invitó a Lima para dar un taller en el centro cultural ‘El Paradero’ de Henri Chispe’s. Al mismo tiempo eso fue la inauguración del Paradero Lab, un espacio libre que da la posibilidad a científicos compartir su pasión en la misma manera como artistas dan exposiciones o músicos conciertos. Esa mezcla de profesiones da una atmosféra muy creativa que lo hace possible obtener perspectivas diferentes a la vida.
Después de una introducción corta sobre potenciales de acción, neuroprótesis, ondas cerebrales y cómo funciona el equipo de BYB, los participantes experimentaron con los aparatos económicos y descubrieron independientemente varias posibilidades cómo usarlos. Quiero agradecer todo el equipo de ´El Paradero´ por su hospitalidad. Ustedes me ensñaron la vida limeña y la función/necesidad de un centro cultural.
